about Christian

Throughout his life, Christian has been surrounded by music: in his family home, during piano lessons & choir practices and through his studies in music education. After some time in the corporate world, Christian found himself once again surrounded by music, this time in his career.

Christian spent six years with the organ building firm Nichols & Simpson in Little Rock, Arkansas, learning to become a voicer... to learn the art of manipulating an organ pipe to create sound... to alter the loudness, softness, or the harmonic or tone quality of a pipe.

Christian was involved in the building of instruments in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Abiline, Texas; Ridgewood, New Jersey; Naples, Florida and Birmingham, Michigan.

In 2010 Christian headed west to make the Mohave desert his home. While Las Vegas has never been known for pipe organs, since his arrival, a schantz organ was dedicated at Christ Church Episcopal, the von Beckerath at UNLV was damaged, brought back to life & rededicated, and now Grace Presbyterian Church is well on its way to a new home & instrument.

Christian continues to service, tune & steward on behalf of area pipe organs as well as instruments throughout the desert southwest.

For digital & hybrid instruments in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada, Christian is a Rodgers Instruments service tech and works with Bob Tall of Robert Tall & Associates.

Christian serves as a Member at Large on the Board of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Visit the chapter web site, Here.

Every pipe organ needs some regular attention & love, especially in the desert climate of the Southwest. Dry air, HVAC systems, dust & extreme temperatures can all negatively impact the way the instrument creates sound.

GENERAL TUNING: Christian highly recommends twice annual general tunings with spot tuning as needed in between. Twice annual tunings... once at the start of the start of the summer heat, once after the heat dissipates... keeps your pipe organ sounding its best. A thorough general tuning is the opportunity to reset temperament, insure that every single pipe is producing sound and at the correct pitch.

SPOT TUNING: Between general tunings, you should schedule spot or touch up tunings as needed throughout the year. By addressing just those pipes or ranks that have fallen out, spot tuning is less time consuming, less invasive to the instrument and less costly.

EMERGENCY TUNING: Christian can even stop by to address that one wonky reed or cipher so that your Sunday service, special performance or visiting artist all sound their best.

Christian’s recommendation of twice annual general tunings (with as needed spot tuning visits) provides ample opportunities to inspect the workings of your instrument and to identify & address any maintenance issues before they escalate. (When's the last time someone checked the oil in your blower motor?)

If it’s been awhile since your last inspection, tuning or service call, contact Christian immediately to schedule an appointment. Left unaddressed, maintenance issues only become more serious and more costly to fix. Protect your investment and help preserve the long-term vitality of your pipe organ with routine care.

The desert can be a windy, dusty place and it’s no different inside a pipe organ. Typically, dust does not negatively affect the instrument, but it can eventually accumulate and cause speech issues (predominantly for reeds) as well as ciphering. Cleaning is a slow, meticulous process because of wiring, pipework, and the sometimes precarious positioning needed to reach parts of the instrument. Even your console needs some occasional TLC.  If your instrument has reeds that are not producing sound, creating the wrong or odd sounds, or ciphering, schedule an inspection & possible cleaning.

Despite the best efforts to properly maintain your pipe organ, eventually repairs will be required: drying or aging leather, leaking chests, malfunctioning magnets, electrical issues or accidents.  Christian can assess, diagnose and guide you through the repair process. As your partner in the preservation of your instrument, Christian can complete the necessary work or will identify when it’s outside the scope of his knowledge or expertise. In these situations, Christian has fostered relationships with tech experts, craftsmen and builders for advice, assessment or subcontracting the repair. For larger jobs, reconstruction or restoration, Christian will counsel you through the process of selecting the right builder for the job and can act as project manager or as an advisor throughout the repair.

Christian will strive to be an excellent steward of your pipe organ. He will help guide you so that every decision made & every action taken will be the best for your instrument, today and for well into the future.

He can assess the fair market value or replacement cost of your instrument for insurance purposes (and some peace of mind).

Christian can meet with your facility’s staff or committees to advise on maintenance, air temperature and other needs or to “introduce” a new organist or staff member to their instrument, inside and out.

Thinking about adding ranks? Upgrading your console? Expanding, replacing or building anew? Christian can act as a consultant, advisor or even an organ committee member to guide you from fundraising to dedication.
